In a webinar hosted on March 22, thought leaders and faculty from University of Denver’s University College explored the implications of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Moderator Arianna Nowakowski and panelists Jack Buffington, Eric Fattor, and Richard Staynings adeptly navigated complex topics pertaining to the short-term and long-term consequences on security, supply chain, media, and globalization.

Richard Staynings, a globally renowned thought leader and advocate for improved cybersecurity as well as instructor in the Information and Communications Technology program at DU, highlighted the need for institutions and organizations to adequately prepare for cyberattacks.

“The government is not going to protect everything, but they will help,” he explained. “Institutions need to protect themselves and follow a decent cybersecurity framework, including incident response, to minimize the impact.”

This led to a discussion about whether cyberattacks are now viewed as an act of war or aggression, and whether such an event would prompt the U.S. or NATO to enter into a conflict. An audience member, Aaron de Los Reyes, inquired about local and regional institutions such as universities preparing citizens to support local hospitals, schools, government, and local businesses in the event of a regional cyberattack. Events like this webinar, the panelists discussed, help create open and transparent dialogue on these important topics.

In addition to cyberattacks, disruptions to the supply chain need to be closely monitored, particularly given the global nature of supply chains, said Jack Buffington, academic director for the Supply Chain Management program at the University of Denver.

“What’s not getting enough attention is the supply war is being fought between Russia and Ukraine,” said Buffington. “That supply chain being disrupted…really scares me.”

This prompted a dialogue about near-sourcing, and whether people are willing to bear the higher costs that come with local supply chains opposed to the current state of a more interdependent, global chain.

“Corn, wheat, barley – these are staples from both Russia and Ukraine, which is a fertile farming region,” explained Buffington. “Africa is highly dependent on these items from this part of the world…further exacerbating the crisis happening in that part of the world. Africa is facing droughts, a shortage of lifeline when it comes to food, on top of the challenges related COVID.”

The costs of war — at a global scale — was a key topic of conversation, as the panel weighed the collateral effects of any economic pressure applied to Russia.

“Imposing punishment on Russia and the cost of imposing that – do we want to make sacrifices?” Asked Eric Fattor, a scholar of international security, political theory and the politics of global media as well as instructor in the Global Community Engagement program. “Shortages in certain essential products is a trade-off when economic pressure is applied to affect a particular political end.”

In addition to supply chain and economic repercussions stemming from the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the crackdown on media has also come into the spotlight, along with the rise of social media. that the invasion is the first “social media war,” with live streaming and up-to-the-minute coverage through social media platforms creating a transformational element of conflict. Fattor addressed what the democratization of content creation means for conflicts moving forward.

“With print and broadcast media heavily regulated, you’re left with a heavier reliance on social media,” Fattor said. “However, those platforms are disabling functionality within Russia itself, for example Google will not support systems in Russia as a way to punish and pressure the government. [Technology] is being wielded as a weapon, including the ability to access it.”

The panelists and audience members collaborated on a list of reliable resources to keep up-to-date on the war, stressing the importance of critically assessing sources in an age of disinformation. Key resources cited were primarily global news outlets, including , , , , and , an independent Russian news outlet currently operating outside of Russia.

International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.

IWD has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group or organization specific.

This year’s IWD theme is “Break the Bias.”

“Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women’s equality. Collectively we can all ,” said the IWD website. “

In honor of International Women’s Day, members of the University College’s DEI Committee shared what Break the Bias means to them in the higher education space and beyond, and shared their pictures striking the #BreaktheBias pose.

Ellen

Breaking the bias in the education space means fully recognizing women diverse talents, not solely the stereotyped talents in which women are labeled. While many women are relationship builders they are also decision makers, data nerds, task-oriented, have strong voices, and get things done. I would like to see the bias broken that women at top levels can lead successfully, and differently than the bias of who can lead organizations at the highest levels. I think that breaking the bias that women can show anger and frustration as freely as men do, and accepted, is a bias to be broken, as well.

Ellen Winiarczyk, EdD
Academic Director and Assistant Teaching Professor
Nonprofit Leadership

Allison

It is critical to break bias in the education space. Our classrooms provide an opportunity to break down barriers and educate others on value of diverse perspectives. Women around the world are depending on educators to help create open spaces to have meaningful dialogue about their experiences, challenges, and struggles. If we can’t talk about these things, meaningful change will not come of it. In my own work, it is so critical to not only support women in the classroom and the workplace, but to alsoprovide mentorship opportunities to create access to leadership positions and skill development. So many women do not feel like they deserve opportunities or they are not “good enough” to apply for that amazing job. It’s no secret that women typically take on multiple roles outside of the workplace and the classroom they are mothers, caretakers, run the household operations, and so much more. Why aren’t we talking about this incredible feat? We have to lift women up, and it is well overdue.

Over the past few days, we have all watched in horror and heartbreak as Russia invaded Ukraine, violating international law and the human rights of the Ukrainian people. As our community grapples with the implications of this ongoing and fast-moving conflict, there are several upcoming events being hosted by our colleagues at the Korbel School of International Studies aimed to inform, educate, and provide space to process the deadly conflict happening in Europe (see below).

Tuesday, March 1 at 12 p.m. (Campus)

The Forum: Open conversation focused on answering your questions about these events with Professors Rachel Epstein, Lewis Griffith, Lisa Conant, and Dean Fritz Mayer.

The Invasion of Ukraine: What 21st Century War in Europe Means for the U.S. and the World

For the first time since 1945, Europe confronts the prospect of major war on the continent. “Russia’s invasion of Ukraine seems destined to become a transformative event in the history of Western nations and the world, likely marking a point at which nearly everything that comes after will differ from what had become before,” says career diplomat and Ambassador Gary Grappo. The invasion has also raised critical questions: Why did Russian President Vladimir Putin invade Ukraine – what does he want, really? Can Ukrainians successfully resist this forced absorption of their nation into a neo-Russian empire? Will the harsh economic sanctions work? How much of a role can diplomacy play now that the invasion is underway? Can the U.S. and NATO avoid direct military confrontation with Russia in Ukraine? And, what if the conflict extends beyond Ukraine’s borders? Join Grappo as he sheds timely light on these and other crucial questions in the unfolding crisis in Ukraine and Eastern Europe.

War in Europe: Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine and its Broader Implications.

The history of Russia and Ukraine dates as far back as medieval times. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 the relationship between the neighboring countries has become increasingly fraught. Crimea was annexed by Russia and the Ukraine’s Donbas region has been the heart of a drawn-out war. Despite most Ukrainians supporting independence, why won’t Russia let its neighbor go? And what are the implications to follow? Professor Rachel Epstein joins Korbel School Dean Fritz Mayer for a timely conversation on the state affairs between Russia and Ukraine.

While staying in one profession your entire life was the common practice in the past, those days are long gone. Statistics show that the average worker today may switch jobs five to seven times in their life, and many are completely changing careers. According to a survey by Indeed, 49 percent of participants said they’ve made a dramatic career shift. The average switcher was at the mid-career point.

There are many reasons why people look to make a change in their career path. Among them is not feeling fulfilled in a role, the inability to demonstrate their talents or interests in their current position, and shifting personal and professional values.

The good news is the Indeed survey showed that 88 percent of career switchers were happier in their new endeavors.

Are you finding yourself at a crossroads in your personal and professional development? What are the next steps you can take to craft a life and career of achievement, impact, and fulfillment?

University of Denver’s Center for Professional Development is offering a new course, Crafting Your Life and Work, to help you gain more clarity, direction, and motivation for your next chapter. With a focus on personal and professional development, the course offers a powerful blend of actionable tools, research, relevant examples, and inspiration to show participants how they can craft their life and work with an entrepreneurial mindset and approach.

Upon completing this course, you will be able to evaluate your current work and life context, develop goals, identify strengths and passions, create an action plan, and begin exploring and experimenting with new ideas for life and work.

The live online, six-session Crafting Your Life and Work course starts September 8. Learn more and register at .
