Stephanie Garnica is the director of global engagement at Denver’s Economic Development & Opportunity Office. In this role, Stephanie leads the international strategy for the city to leverage and promote its’ global assets to attract foreign direct investment, oversees diplomacy, advises on international affairs and elevates Denver’s reputation as a global hub of activity. She brings a wealth of economic development and community leadership experience to the job and is known as a well-connected resource for the international community.

Her previous roles include senior manager of air service development for Denver International Airport (DEN); director of business development for the World Trade Center Denver; and director of trade & investment for the Americas at the Colorado Office Economic Development and International Trade. She lived and worked in Central America after graduating college and is fluent in Spanish. She has traveled and worked extensively throughout the world and hosted global visitors to Denver from over 100 countries.

Given her deep international experience, Stephanie is involved in several globally-focused initiatives in the Denver Metro area. She is a Board Member of the Biennial of the Americas, World Trade Center Denver, Japan America Society of Colorado and Study Colorado. She also serves on the CIBER (Center for International Business Education & Research) Advisory Council at the University of Colorado at Denver and as an Advisory Member of the Global Community Engagement Program at DU’s College of Professional Studies.

Education

Stephanie earned a master’s degree in International Business from the University of Colorado at Denver and an undergraduate degree in International Marketing from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Steve Jenks is a career researcher with over 10 years of experience in quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research for industries ranging from universities to non-profits to global e-commerce and social media platforms. He has a passion for helping organizations make data-informed decisions that lead to positive, sustainable change.

Steve currently serves as an UX Researcher at MeasuringU, a Denver-based research agency, where he provides research services including study design, data collection, analysis, and reporting, using surveys, interviews, and in-person product trials. Previously, he served as a course strategist for edX, a researcher for the Alliance for Research on Regional Colleges, and in program evaluation roles at Cornell University, Ithaca College and the University of Tennessee.

Education

Steve earned a B.S. in African-American Studies from Florida State University, an M.S. in College Student Personnel from the University of Tennessee and a Ph.D. in Higher Education (cognate in Research Methods and Statistics) from the University of Denver.

Motivation for Teaching

Steve loves learning about real-world challenges in different industries and coaching people through the process of discovering potential solutions. He believes that research should be accessible to everyone and strives to help students understand how to be better consumers of research while learning ways to better inform their professional work as well.

Helping Students be Successful

Steve teaches students research processes by breaking down complex ideas and tasks into individual components, striving to help students make connections to prior professional and life experiences to make learning personal and practical. He loves coaching students through all steps of research, and often helps students with future projects after courses have ended.

Therese Lask has a 30-year career in higher education and consulting with expertise in Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, Development, and Human Resources. The common thread through all her experience is to enhance the employee experience by focusing on individuals, teams, and organizations.

Professional Experience

At Colorado State University, Therese spent six years designing, implementing, and facilitating the Supervisor Development Program for over 2000 supervisors on campus. Along with her work with supervision, Therese consulted with over 50 teams, designing custom programs for their unique needs.

In addition to her experience in higher education, Therese has worked as a consultant to the Gallup Organization, where she developed and facilitated an online course and webinar series focused on infusing a strengths development model into various programs and services, and produced an associated workbook. Therese has published a book, “Your Life as a River,” and has written numerous articles on the topic of strengths development. As a consultant to Academic Impressions, Therese developed and facilitated a Supervisory Development video course series, delivered plenary sessions for the Women’s’ Leadership Conference, and taught numerous boot camps and webinars on leadership development and wellbeing. In addition, Therese developed and facilitated numerous custom programs for a variety of needs.

In addition to facilitation, Therese has coached professionals in a wide range of industries including higher education, health care, engineering, and information technology. Her expertise in coaching includes leadership development, career development, and organizational development. In 2023, Therese founded the Athena Institute, a consulting firm focused on supervisor and team development. She is actively consulting with higher education and state agencies to help enhance employees’ experience by building more positive, productive cultures.
