EUCAST CEO Jaehyeong Kim boarded a plane from South Korea to Denver in March. He came to meet his first American interns — University of Denver students.

His company is a leader in advanced wireless telecommunications access. In Colorado, it hopes to expand wireless broadband access to rural and remote communities and businesses.

“I decided to establish the company in the U.S. I’m not going to bring Korean people to America. I’m going to hire 100% in America,” Kim says.

DU students from University College and the Ritchie School of Engineering and Computer Science will help with marketing, communications, media relations and product testing.

Ana Loor Mendoza, a student of organizational leadership, was born with an entrepreneurial spirit. Following in the footsteps of her great-grandfather, who started a hardware company in Ecuador, Mendoza will serve as EUCAST’s project manager and product marketer.

“It’s great to see so much business headquartered in Denver. I think it says a lot about the opportunities not just in Denver, but also at the University,” Mendoza says.

The partnership was facilitated by Jim Ducay an adjunct professor in the Daniels College of Business and co-founder of the Colorado Universities Innovation Council (CUIC).

“They’re coming to the U.S. to say, ‘We have technology. There are more opportunities. Let’s understand what you’re doing and understand the U.S. market,’” Ducay says.

So far, EUCAST envisions use of its technology on Native American reservations, rural municipalities, the Colorado Department of Transportation and even industrial markets such as oil and gas.

EUCAST takes existing technology and creates a private network, using the Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS).

In 2020, the FCC authorized full use of the CBRS for wireless provider commercialization, allowing providers to deploy 5G networks without licenses. EUCAST is not interested in becoming the next AT&T or Verizon, however. Instead, it’s leveraging its technology to deploy in areas without reliable broadband.

“The goal is to provide those municipalities with a network they can operate on their own. They aren’t in business to be like, this is a $50/month plan. This is for private deployment in the public,” Ducay says.

DU’s partnership with EUCAST highlights a larger collaboration with CUIC. The nonprofit sees the whole as greater than the sum of its parts. By putting collaboration first, it multiplies opportunities for students across Colorado.

“It’s not to take away from the academics. We fully believe we need the best engineers, the best marketing people and the best finance people,” Ducay says.

The current work is only beginning, though — a 30-week opportunity made possible by Kim’s dream to launch in America.

My lifelong goal, personally and professionally, is to live a life that’s bigger than myself. Whether it’s raising money and awareness for healthcare, education, assisting organizations with communication efforts, volunteering, or learning new languages, my graduate education at University College has enhanced this goal and opened doors to new opportunities that I didn’t think were possible. My professors and classmates also provided me with a rich and valuable education while balancing my full-time job at a law firm. The biggest thank you goes to my older brother, who encouraged me to pursue the master’s degree after finishing my certificate. Thank you University College for a rewarding experience and for helping me towards my dream career helping others.

Congratulations, Mechelle!

Highlighting the collection of 135 artworks valued at $10 million located at The MADDEN Museum of Art in Greenwood Village, the University of Denver’s Enrichment Program will offer a three-session course this October dedicated to the 19th– and early 20th-century paintings and artists part of the collection. A hidden gem in the south suburbs, The MADDEN Museum of Art exhibits artworks donated to the University of Denver by commercial developer and art collector John Madden, Jr

“We’re hoping to bring awareness to this impressive and relatively unknown collection of art in Greenwood Village,” said Michael McGuire, dean of University College where the Enrichment Program is housed. “This is an excellent learning opportunity for the community and highlights the invaluable collaboration happening between community leaders at the University of Denver.”

The course will be taught by Dan Jacobs, art consultant and former director of the Myhren Gallery, and students will enjoy an up-close examination of American masters and Italian artists represented in the acquisition. In addition, students will gain insights to how the artists helped to develop a national identity through their depictions of landscape and rural scenes.

“Participants will leave with greater knowledge and appreciation of the paintings and artists featured in the collection, along with learning more about related research,” said Deb Olson, director of the Enrichment Program. “This collection and the course series open the door to new opportunities for those interested in art history and beyond.”

The Madden collection doubles the monetary value of the University Art Collection’s existing art assets, now reaching more than 3,400 artworks, and is part of the University of Denver’s commitment to expand accessible collections and leverage them as educational resources for students and the community.

Wine and appetizers will be served each evening and the grand finale will feature a catered Italian feast. To register, visit professionalstudies.du.edu/enrichment or call 303-871-2291.

We asked graduates to share their journey to graduation. Here is what Carrie Warren (Bachelor of Arts in Leadership and Organization Studies) had to say in her own words…

The journey to achieve my Bachelor of Arts in Leadership and Organization Studies did not come easy. Along the way, I was met with many financial setbacks and emotional challenges. At times, I could hear self-doubt in the back of my mind, quietly whispering—Do you have what it takes to be successful? Is your family time worth sacrificing? Are you sure this is what you want? Looking back, I now know that clarity was always in front of me, all I had to do was listen to words of my DU Professors along the way.

At the beginning, Dr. Margo Linn Espenlaub gave me the insight to see that I was already “successful,” I simply needed to take ownership of being the CEO of my life. In the middle, Dr. Arthur C. Jones showed me my ancestral history and explained that to come into one’s own, you must learn who you are and in time you see that “time away from family” is not a sacrifice but a gift of clarity. At the end, it was Dr. Cara DiEnno who taught me that “to want something” is to be bold and embrace the strength and drive that it takes to be committed to your purpose, because your Head + your Heart = your Hustle. I give thanks to all the DU Professors that have helped me walk my path. With your insight and encouragement came the removal of self-doubt and the confidence to succeed.

But I didn’t walk this journey alone. My husband Rahshaun and beautiful kids Shyla, Shemar and Sheyden have been with me from the beginning. Each, encouraging me through detour and difficulties, while serving as a reminder that it doesn’t matter how long it takes or what lies at the end of the road—embrace the journey. Of course, successful completion of my undergraduate degree could not be achieved were it not for the many wonderful scholarship donors who believed in me. Thank you, for your personal and monetary investment!

In the end, what started as a four-year plan will end eleven years later. This experience is one that I will treasure for the rest of my life. Most memorable, I will never forget my travel abroad to Cape Town, South Africa and the opportunity to complete a cultural immersion in Langa Township, wilderness-based experiential with Educo Africa, and a service-learning internship with Africa Tikkun. It may have taken me eleven years to get here but I made it. To forge ahead, I had to stop looking back. I didn’t allow a failed plan or expectations to steal the gifts before me because I learned—there are no short-cuts to a place worth going. Therefore, I’m glad I came and I’m glad I conquered. University of Denver, many thanks for the opportunity!

We asked graduates to share their journey to graduation. Here is what Ashley Ramirez Scott (Strategic Human Resources) had to say in her own words…

My family and I will be traveling to Denver from Texas for graduation, and we are SO excited. During my 14 months at DU, I have thoroughly enjoyed taking classes through University College. During these 14 months, I have had to push myself continuously and remember what the end goal was. In late August/ early September, our area endured Hurricane Harvey, and my family was displaced for over five days, returning home to no electricity or running water. Receiving a phone call during this time to check in from my Academic Director, Pat Greer was so heartwarming. As well, I have strived to show my four children that with determination and perseverance, anything is possible. My children have witnessed many of my late nights working on assignments, especially my 4 1/2 year old who pulls up her chair to sit next to me as I type away. Maintaining my most important roles – mother and wife – professional position as Niche Lead and Multimedia Sales Consultant for the Victoria Advocate, couldn’t be done without the never-ending support of my husband.

Congratulations, Ashley!
